O'Brien's Secure High Profile Contracts

In 2013 O’Brien’s were awarded the contract by Capital Shopping Centres to demolish the Federation Brewery in Gateshead. The project consisted of the demolition of the main 25 metre high process building, numerous warehouses, an effluent plant and a service centre.

All were be reduced to floor slab level with the materials being removed from site by the Waste Division so they could be recycled and re-processed. The Site Manager and his team demolished the service centre and effluent plant at the Brewery site whilst also dismantling warehouse buildings. These warehouse buildings will be re-erected following the completion of the soft strip and asbestos removal phase of the works.

The project mobilised in early February 2013 and was completed mid-June 2013. The Demolition Division were also busy demolishing 199 houses in Hartlepool and 103 houses in Redcar for Keepmoat Homes as part of a re-development strategy to revitalise run down areas.

Other new projects include the demolition of an old print works which forms part of Newcastle City Councils Newington Road Depot and the demolition of a footbridge over the tracks of Woodend Station in Solihull. The latter contract was awarded by May Gurney and work started in early April.

In Kent work is underway on the Pfizer Facility which was ear marked for demolition late in 2012 with O’Brien’s the demolition contractor of choice. The large Research and Development facility moved production of their product to another facility leaving a large proportion of the onsite laboratories and offices derelict.

As the buildings were bespoke designed R & D structures there was little chance of finding a new tenant so demolition was the only option. The contract was awarded in late February 2013 and works onsite started in early March.

The Site Manager and his team spent time setting up the site as there was strict requirement for environmental impact reduction measures to be put in place prior to demolition commencing. This included the erection of over 2000 metres of herras fencing and bespoke fabricated hoarding panels and the use of our new state of the art Dust Boss dry fog mist machine.
